The Mining Qualifications Authority (MQA) was established under the Mine Health and Safety Act No.29 of 1996. It is a Sector Education and Training Authority (SETA) which is responsible for administering South Africa’s mining and minerals sector skills development programmes. The MQA aim to ensure that the countries mining and minerals sector is equipped with sufficient skills to improve the employment equity, health and safety and productivity standards.
ABOUT THE BURSARY PROGRAMME – FIELDS COVERED
MQA will be awarding bursaries for studies which lead to a career within the Mining and Minerals Sector – specifically the following fields of study:
University and University of Technology students:
- Analytical Chemistry
- Chemical Engineering (mineral processing)
- Electrical Engineering (heavy current)
- Electro-Mechanical Engineering
- Environmental Health and Management
- Geology
- Industrial Engineering
- Jewellery Design and Manufacturing
- Mechanical Engineering
- Metallurgical Engineering (extractive)
- Mine Survey
- Mining Engineering
- Rock Engineering / Seimology
TVET College students:
- Boilermaker
- Diesel Mechanic
- Electrician
- Fitter and Turner
- Fitting (including Machinery)
- Instrumentation Mechanic
- Millwright
- Rigger Ropes man
MORE ABOUT THE BURSARY PROGRAMME – SELECTION
All applicants will receive receipt of their application via email. If you do not receive further communication from the MQA by 31 November 2020, please regard your application as unsuccessful.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):
- South African citizen
- Female
- Reside within a rural community
- Unemployed
- Currently in Matric or completed Matric
- Studying or intend on studying within one of the aforementioned fields of study (undergraduate studies only)
- Studying or intend on studying at a public University/ University of Technology/ TVET College
- Strong academic record
- Proven financial need, with a household income of not more than R600 000 per year
HOW TO APPLY FOR THE BURSARY
Download and complete the MQA Bursary Application Form (NEW applications) (.pdf)
Submit clear copies of the following supporting documentation along with your completed application form (the submission of these documents is compulsory – if any items are missing, your application be disregarded):
- ID document (certified copy)
- Grade 11 final report, if currently in Matric (certified copy)
- Matric certificate, if completed Matric (certified copy)
- Full tertiary academic record, if currently at tertiary level (on official letterhead)
- Parents/ guardians proof of household income (latest payslips if employed/ affidavit if unemployed/ proof of SASSA payment if applicable)

Please note these important details when applying:
1) The applications form is a fillable PDF format – you must complete it electronically on your computer or smartphone and NOT by hand.
