The ISS seeks to appoint various interns:

  • Communication Intern
  • Intern, Central Africa and Great Lakes
  • Intern, African Futures and Innovation
  • Intern, Justice and Violence Prevention

Requirements

Communication Intern

  • 3-year tertiary qualification in communication/journalism/marketing or a field relevant to the work of the ISS
  • Excellent English verbal and writing skills (proficiency in French will be an advantage)
  • Experience in graphic design, photography and videography
  • Experience in uploading and formatting website content using a CMS
  • Software knowledge requirements: Microsoft Office and Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator and Acrobat

Intern, Central Africa and Great Lakes

  • A post-graduate degree in criminology, social policy, political science, sociology, strategic and security studies, law, international studies or a related field
  • Good command of written and spoken English and French. Some knowledge of either Lingala, Kiswahili or Kinyarwanda will be an advantage
  • Good research, writing and analytical abilities
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Independent, creative and proactive

Intern, African Futures and Innovation

  • A post-graduate degree in economics, econometrics, statistics, data science or related field
  • Computer literate and working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, Microsoft Teams and Outlook
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Independent, creative and proactive
  • Experience in graphic design/chart design would be advantageous

Intern, Justice and Violence Prevention

  • A strong desire to improve policing and public safety in South Africa
  • A post-graduate degree in a relevant field is preferred (e.g., criminology, social policy, political science, sociology, and related areas)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English; proficiency in additional South African languages will be an advantage
  • Excellent research, writing and analytical abilities
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Independent, open-minded, creative and proactive
  • Familiarity with evidence-based practice, programme evaluation, and/or policing will be an advantage
