Bhekisizwe Mahlawe was born on 1st of March 1990 in uMzimkhulu township in Harry Gwala District Municipality in the KwaZulu-Natal province of South Africa. After finishing metric, Bhekisizwe wanted to join the entertainment industry but his family didn’t believe he would succeed because nobody from their township ever made it in this industry.

Mahlawe didn’t go further than metric with education. He always wanted to become an actor but instead his family did not support his dream of becoming an actor. But Bhekisizwe Mahlawe’s family advised him to enroll for a teaching degree at the University of South Africa. Though he took their advice, Bhekisizwe dropped out six months later and followed his heart.

Acting career of Bhekisizwe

Bhekisizwe Mahlawe did not just start at the top but had to go places where he could display his talent. On the other hand, he had to do small jobs at Proteas Hotel in Durban while he was marketing for a proper acting job. In 2010, Mahlawe started to shine as he was acting for Mnyango wesoku Vakasha, since then he has never stopped acting.

He later decided to quit his job at Proteas Hotel and went to Johannesburg. And yet he had not yet notified his family that he had quit studying. Bhekisizwe later got a role on eKasi: Our Stories and his family saw him on TV, that’s when he told them he had joined acting and left teaching course. ¹

Bhekisizwe appeared on Soul City, Sokhulu and Partners, Rhythm City as a nurse, and Promise. He played Nkanyiso, the son of Nonto who has to wrestle with the shame of being the product of rape, in the SABC1 drama series Shreds and Dreams. The star is also known for playing Sporoporo on Generations: the Lagacy. Bhekisizwe Mahlawe is currently playing Calvin Gumede on etv drama series, Durban Gen. He is acting alongside Nelisiwa Sibiya who plays Dr Mbali Mthethwa.
