Mukuba University Opened- President Edgar Lungu

President Edgar Lungu has reiterated the patriotic government’s commitment to providing quality higher education for all through enhancement of skills development.

President Lungu said his government is impartial to delivering quality higher education to all parts of the country by investing in infrastructure development in all institutions of higher learning.

Mukuba University is a public university in Garneton, Kitwe, Zambia. The Mukuba University, formerly Copperbelt Secondary Teachers College, was established in 1974 by the Ministry of Education to train Teachers of Science for deployment in secondary schools around the country

“Education opens up opportunities for the development of the people and the country as a whole.  We are therefore investing in infrastructure development for higher education to ensure that students are provided with quality education. It is for the same reason that we are constructing more universities in Eastern, Luapula, Northern and North Western provinces.

President Edgar Lungu also said that his government will not condone discrimination of development in certain regions as the entire country is entitled to equal opportunities in accessing quality higher education.

He has further commended stakeholders for supporting the government’s efforts to take infrastructure development to institutions of higher learning.

President Lungu said infrastructural development in institutions of higher learning has been slow but he was delighted at the progress made at Mukuba University and also took the opportunity to urge the students to safe guard the infrastructure for the benefit of all Zambians.

He was speaking during the commissioning of Mukuba University in Kitwe.

Speaking at the same event, Minister of Higher education Professor Nkand Luo commended the president for identifying Mukuba University as one of the Universities with a focus on Science and Mathematics as technology and innovation are a pre-requisite for the development of a country.

‘Countries that have prioritized technology and innovation such as Japan and Israel are leaders of the world. It is in the same vein that the Ministry of Higher Education has decided to extend student loans to students at Mukuba University to increase student enrollment in institutions that are focused on science and mathematics.

She also called on Mukuba University students to desist from engaging in riotous behavior but consider the University to be a place of learning.

The Copperbelt University was in the year 2017 mandated with the task of overseeing operations and turning Mukuba into a fully fledged university. Since the takeover, the Copperbelt University has put in place a robust programme to improve the learning and teaching environment and upgrade the status of the institution into a competitive University of choice.

The first phase of the project was initiated in April 2009 at a cost of 74million and has seen the completion of a double story lecture theater, library and two hostel blocks increasing the capacity of bed spaces by 40%.  Phase two of the project is at 50% completion.
