About Cities and Infrastructure for Growth Zambia (CIGZambia):

CIGZambia is a facility that provides high-quality independent technical advice and assistance to Zambian government bodies and private sector organisations engaged in projects/programmes that help harness the potential of Zambia’s cities and towns to act as drivers for economic growth and job creation. CIGZambia is funded by the UK’s Department for International Development (DFID).

  • increasing urban productivity;
  • improving inclusive access to urban economic infrastructure services;
  • increasing investment into urban economic infrastructure services; and,
  • enhancing national and regional integration between cities.

About the Role

CIGZambia is seeking a technical advisor to support the work of a flexible and demand-driven technical assistance programme as a Renewable Energy Expert with the objective of improving access to urban infrastructure services.  Reporting to the Energy Component Lead, this role will play a critical role in achieving CIGZambia’s overall objectives.

Project Responsibilities

  • Support CIGZambia’s projects that include renewable energy as part of the project deliverables
  • Provide expert guidance in relation to the design, construction and implementation of renewable energy solutions and similar areas of technology, including the provision of power system models using professional software
  • Promote the use of renewable energy in CIGZambia’s projects to achieve key logframe objectives, including job creation, climate resilience and adaption, investment and the incorporation of best practice in gender and social inclusion for project delivery
  • Written and verbal communication with key stakeholders to present plans, concepts, results and analysis including clients, sub-contractors, Government agencies, financiers and community groups as required under the terms of reference of each project

Immediate Requirement

  • Undertake detailed power system modelling of potential power supply solutions for farm blocks using sources of renewable energy as well as grid supply and thermal sources to determine the most effective solution using a multi-criteria assessment to be developed with the client
  • Support the development of a pilot project for a power leasing company providing power solutions to commercial and industrial customers, including system design, procurement, commissioning and performance monitoring
  • Provide a design for test equipment at the solar energy centre at the University of Zambia
  • Support various projects with ZESCO in capacity development, performance improvement and resource mobilisation
  • Support where required the development of renewable energy projects that are consistent with the CIGZambia logframe
  • Document theory of change for agreed areas of intervention and assist in the preparation of detailed terms of reference for approval by CIGZambia / DFID, including estimated budget and resourcing

Key Qualifications

  • Qualification at Postgraduate level or above in renewable energy from a reputable university
  • Demonstrable skills in design, analysis and operation of renewable energy power systems
  • Knowledge and experience of power system modelling software
  • Demonstrable skills in written and verbal communication and proven reporting writing skills to high professional standards
  • Experience in undertaking industrial project work
  • Experience in recommending logical and practical solutions in technically complex situations taking into account both technical and non-technical factors
  • Potential to develop strong project management and leadership skills
