Burna Boy, widely known by his stage name, has his real name as Damini Ebunoluwa Ogulu. He is a renowned Nigerian singer, songwriter, and record producer, and Grammy Award winner in 2023.

Burna Boy was born 2 July 1991 to Mr. and Mrs. Ogulu in Mbiama in Rivers State. He grew up in South London, England, before  relocating  to Rivers State,Port Harcourt and later to Lagos. He has two sisters, Jehovah-Nissi and Ronami. Nissi is a singer, graphic artist, entrepreneur and mechanical engineer. His older sister Ronami is a scientist and designer.

He attained wide recognition in 2012 after releasing his hit single, ‘Like to Party’, a song that was a huge success and became the lead single of his debut album, L.I.F.E. He has since released other good songs, including popular songs Tonight and Run My Race.

He attended Montessori International School, and later attended Corona, Agbara, Lagos for his secondary school.

Burna Boy later graduated at the University Of Sussex with a degree in Media Technology.

He also studied Media Communications and Culture at Oxford Brookes University, London between 2009 to 2010.

Burna Boy kick-started his music career in 2010.  The singer released his first record Shobeedo, professionally in 2011 and has dominated the music space in Nigeria.

He is one of the most successful Nigerian musicians of all time, with his fusion of dancehall, reggae, afrobeat, and pop.

He has won numerous awards and accolades, including a Grammy Award in 2023.

In August 12, 2013 he released his debut studio album, L.I.F.E, under the Aristokrat record label and featured hit singles like ‘Like to Party and Tonight’.

The album was a huge success and shot Burna Boy to immense popularity in Nigeria. The song also got him a nomination for Best Album of the Year at the 2014 Nigeria Entertainment Awards.

The song received wide airplay in all media platforms across the country and also peaked at number 7 on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart in August 2013.

On 5 September 2012, the video for “Like to Party” was released. The music video, which was shot by Square ball Media services, ran for 4 minutes and 9 seconds.

He is currently signed to an American record label called Atlantic Records. He is also the founder and CEO of Spaceship Records, a Nigerian-based record label in line with his dream that he had a burning desire in him to own his own music company a the beginning of 2014.

 

Burna is said to be the grand son of Benson Idonije, the then manager with Fela Anikulapo Kuti and this perhaps influenced his musical career.  Burna  is a Nigerian Reggae dancehall singer Afrofusion and songwriter.

On 24 September 2012, Burna Boy released a single titled “Tonight” On 31 December 2012, he released the video for the song. In the music video, Burna Boy expresses his innate feelings.

One of the most sought after Nigeria musicians, Burna has a lot of songs to his credit including “trumpet”, Abeg Abeg Abeg, and the like party which he featured with popular stars like Davido and others.
