ILO Internship Programme provides an opportunity for talented individuals to:

(a) increase understanding of relevant issues at the international level by involving them directly in the work of the Office and the application of ILO principles, programmes and strategies;

(b) gain practical experience with the ILO directly related to their field of study.

The internship programme is not intended to lead to a career in the ILO. There should be no expectation of further employment at the end of the internship.

Learning areas

Want to join a diverse and dynamic team to learn all about Programming and Developmental Cooperation Projects in the ILO, then this internship is for you?

As an intern in the Programme Unit you will be exposed to Programme Support techniques and system such as Budget tracking, Project tracking and Implementation, Monitoring and Evaluation processes including reporting. In terms of logistical support, you will exposed to drafting correspondence within and outside ILO, procurement processes using IRIS system, Purchasing Committee Minutes, workshop planning, Facilitation and ultimately report on an activity. In addition, you will be exposed to the development of the ILO’s Decent Work Country Programme (DWCP) and learn about the Decent Work Agenda and its priority areas.

You will gain working experience with Project in Zambia, Malawi and Mozambique as well as sector specific specialists if need be. Some of the tasks that you will work with project teams including providing technical review inputs to reports, raising payments, making logistical arrangements for meetings, workshops and trainings. Project expenditure tracking will be part of the work you will exposed to during the period of internship. Develop the minutes of meetings. Assist in preparation of presentation material. Contribute to creation of project information.

Required profile

Master of Arts or equivalent higher degree in any Social Sciences, Development Studies, Economics.

Applicant should currently follow a course of study (last year of Master degree or above), or have completed studies within 12 months prior to this application.


Any relevant work experience and knowledge of  Programme Management would be an advantage


Working oral and written knowledge of English

Positive attitude and ability to multi-task, work under pressure, ability to plan, prioritize and deliver tasks on time. Ability to remain calm, in control and good humoured even under pressure and tight deadlines; Demonstrates openness to change and ability to manage complexities; Responds positively to critical feedback and differing points of view; Solicits feedback about the impact of his/her own behaviour. Ability to produce quality results under deadlines. A desire to work with and gain the confidence and respect of people with different language, national and cultural backgrounds.
