About the Show:
On October 19, 2016, Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) hosted the premiere of the comedy quiz show Hard Quiz. A spin-off of his “Hard Chat” segment on the satirical television news programme The Weekly with Charlie Pickering, the show is hosted by Tom Gleeson. In front of a studio audience, it is taped at the Southbank ABC Melbourne studios.

In a press release, Gleeson declared on May 24, 2019, that he was leaving the show and resigning as host. The announcement of Gleeson’s nomination for the Gold Logie Award for Most Popular Personality on Australian Television was made on May 26, 2019.
Hard Quiz features four contestants per episode, each of whom has chosen a specialty. Nothing in the subject area (including the ones chosen for “Tom’s Round”) may be used again. Every right response carries a 5-point value, whereas every incorrect response deducts 5 points.
Hard Quiz 2025 Rounds:
Expert Round:
- Each candidate gets five questions about a different subject related to their area of expertise.
- They must buzz in to answer, and if they answer incorrectly or take too long, they are shut out of the question, allowing the other players a chance to respond.
Tom’s Round:
- The competitors provide their responses to each of the five multiple-choice questions from a topic Gleeson has predetermined using their monitors. The red buzzer must be pressed to lock in a chosen response.
- Except for the final question, which has six alternatives and is played for double points (10 points for a correct response), each question has four possible answers.
- The words “Too Soft” are now displayed on the podium of the player who received the lowest score after this round.
The People’s Round (Against the Clock):
- Depending on the episode, general knowledge questions are provided in this round with a relatively ambiguous time limit (between 35 and over 90 seconds).
- Once more, the competitors buzz in to speak. When time runs out, the player with the lowest score is likewise eliminated.
Tiebreaker: Hard-Off:
- A “hard-off” is used to break ties when there is a tie for the lowest score and an elimination is necessary.
- In this scenario, Gleeson provides two options for a given question, and the first participant to buzz in then choose one of the two options.
Final round:
- The winner receives a trophy, the limited-edition big brass mug, or in the case of the “Battle of The Duds” episodes, the aforementioned big brass mug with a hole in the bottom.
- The final two contestants alternate answering questions about their chosen subject area in a best-of-five penalty shootout format.
